About Us
The American Red Cross in South Central New York delivers vital Red Cross services to communities in south central New York through a network of highly trained volunteers who are available to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization that responds to more than 70,000 disasters every year, whether it is a fire in a home, an industrial accident affecting thousands or a hurricane disrupting an entire region - the Red Cross will be there to help when help is needed most. It is where people mobilize to help their neighbors who have been affected by natural and human caused disasters-across the street, across the country and across the world. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a global network of 186 national societies that offer neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war and aid victims of devastating natural disasters.
For more than 125 years, the mission of the American Red Cross has been to help individuals and families prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Each year, in communities large and small across America, over 600 local Red Cross chapters comprised of 500,000 volunteers and 35,000 employees, deliver services to people in distress, to people preparing for emergencies and to people in need of life saving blood. These nationwide Red Cross chapters form the cornerstone of the organization, working in partnership with other agencies and organizations throughout the country to provide services to the American people.
The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on generous donations of time, money and blood to do its work and is made up of a network of more than 600 locally supported chapters, 36 Blood Services regions, 7 Blood Services divisions, 58 Service to the Armed Forces stations and nearly 20 International Offices around the world.
An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The American National Red Cross is headquartered in Washington, Gail J. McGovern is President and CEO, and Bonnie McElveen-Hunter is Chairman of the Board of Governors.
